Andrea Nelson

SPHR

President

 

Andrea Nelson, SPHR, has been in the HR profession for 18 years. With a passion for startups, she co-founded a small Aerospace company in 2000. In 2004, she completed the Human Resource Management certificate program through the University of California Santa Barbara's Extension program. In 2009, Andrea joined a technology startup and was a significant contributor to their exponential growth. In 2016, Andrea received the highest level certification, Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) from the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI).

In January 2017, Andrea joined FastSpring, as their Director of People & Culture. FastSpring is a fast-growing e-commerce and subscription management SaaS company.

 

Carolyn Gamberutti

Secretary

 

Carolyn Gamberutti, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, is currently the Director of Human Resources at Yardi Systems, Inc. in Santa Barbara. She is a long time member of the Santa Barbara community after moving to the area to attend UCSB. She graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Economics and later completed the UCSB Extension Human Resources certification program. She earned the SPHR certification in 2006 and now also holds the SHRM-SCP certification.

Carolyn has a wide range of management experience and has focused on a human resources leadership career for more than 15 years. During 2013 and 2014, she served in the role of SBHRA's Compensation & Benefits Committee Chairperson. managing the SBHRA compensation & benefits survey sold to SBHRA members to help determine competitive salaries in the unique area of Santa Barbara. 

Carolyn became a member of SBHRA several years back to learn more about human resources, to attend its excellent programs and learning opportunities, and to meet other HR professionals in the area. She values the organization, which has proven to be a great professional resource on many levels. She continues to learn new tips and really enjoys the opportunity to share "lessons learned" with her HR colleagues. 

 

Elizabeth Rosas

Treasurer 

 

Elizabeth Rosas was born in Mexico and moved to Santa Barbara at the age of 5, where she grew up and attended local schools from elementary through high school. Since high school graduation, she has been employed in cross-functional support roles, including HR, daily financial operations, and office administration. Currently, since 2012, she is employed by local non-profit Ganna Walska Lotusland, where she serves as Human Resources & Office Manager.

 

Her passion for the HR career field has led her to pursue a college degree and certification as an HR Professional. In additiona, Elizabeth takes pride in volunteering for other local non-profit organizations, such as, Friends of VADA and Santa Barbara Allstars Booster Club. 

 

Peggy Stevens

Past President

 

Peggy Stevens has over 25 years as an HR executive in the ultra luxury hospitality industry, including the San Ysidro Ranch (most expensive hotel in the US and Canada). She is presently Corporate Director of Human Resources for Fespar Enterprises, LLC / H. Parker Hospitality, with responsibility for all aspects of the HR function for nine (9) properties, along with several hotel projects to be built in the near future. She holds a liberal arts degree from Harper College and has been an instructor for the UCSB Extension's "Managing Human Resources" course. 

Peggy has lived in Santa Barbara since 1978, and is well known in the community as a past volunteer for: Hospice of Santa Barbara and a past board member of the Junior League of Santa Barbara. She has held several positions on the Santa Barbara Human Resources Association Board, including President-Elect, Secretary, Salary Survey Chair, and Legislative Affairs Chair.

 

Sonja Smith

Programs, Co-Chair 

 

Sonja has over 15 years of experience in Human Resource and Talent Acquisition, providing guidance and leadership to senior managers in startups, established organizations and entrepreneurial ventures driving HR and Recruitment.
 
Prior to moving to Santa Barbara, Sonja's broad experience in the UK included employee relations, talent acquisition, management, leading all HR initiatives and implementing systems, processes & procedures working in various industries including Technology, Recruitment, Telecommunications and Professional Services.
 
In June 2018, Sonja joined American Riviera Bank to lead their HR and Training Teams with her extensive hands-on experience managing their HR projects, learning & development, recruiting, compensation, performance management and employee engagement.

Prior to American Riviera Bank, Sonja lead the HR Team at Invoca for 3 years after spending 2 years on the Citrix HR team managing and implementing Talent Acquisition Operations. Sonja earned her degree in HR Management at Coventry University in the UK.

 

Eva Enrigue

Eva Enrigue is a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley and works with Business Owners, HR Professionals, Retirement Plan Sponsors, and Participants to offer best in class Investment Offerings and Employee Retirement Plan Education.

 

Christina Stowell

College Relations, Co-Chair

 

Christina Stowell is a Human Resources Manager for CMC Rescue, Inc., known for manufacturing high quality Search and Rescue equipment. CMC differentiates itself through its impassioned purpose to save lives, the strong performance of their 106 Employee Owners, and the common culture that binds them together. In her role, she is responsible to drive the overall effectiveness and strategy of the HR organization, building the capacity to meet their talent challenges, which include talent acquisition and development, leadership & organization development, compensation, strategic benefits design and delivery, succession planning and employer branding efforts.

Before joining The CMC, Christina was Human Resources Manager at Clipper Windpower. Prior to joining Clipper, she started her career with ADP, in Human Resources and Client Services. Christina holds a Bachelor’s of Science, Business – Human Resource Management from WGU as well as a Human Resources Management Certificate from UCSB and a Payroll Management Certificate from Bellevue College.

She has been honored as Santa Barbara Human Resources Association 2014 Member of the Year, as well as 2007’s Innovative Solutions Winner. She is a current SBHRA Board Member and serves as the Director of College Relations, which she has co-chaired since 2014. In addition, she has also been the Advisor to the UCSB HR Club since 2011.

In her spare time, she enjoys yoga and spending time with family and friends.

 

Emily Blancarte

College Relations, Co-Chair

 

Emily Blancarte is the HR Coordinator at Asylum Research. Asylum Research, is an Oxford Instruments Company that designs, manufactures, markets, and sells atomic force microscopes to customers worldwide.  She is a UCSB grad with a BA in Sociology and is currently working towards gaining her HR Certification through the UCSB extension program.  

In her spare time, she enjoys going on road trips and spending time with friends and family.

Vivian Goena

Vivian Goena, SHRM-CP, SHRM California Employment Law Micro-Credential, is the Director of Administration & Human Resources for Damitz Brooks Nightingale Turner & Morrisset, Certified Public Accountants.  She is a Santa Barbara native and involved with the local community through a variety of organizations. Vivian is on the Santa Barbara Employers Advisory Council’s Guidance Committee, Coastal Housing Partnership’s Advisory Council, and she is a founding member of the United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Women United. 

 

Skylar Slayman

Skylar Slayman is a Business Development Manager for BB&H Benefit Designs. He graduated from CSU Chico with a degree in Business Management. 

As part of the BB&H team, he helps implement strategies that allow organizations to achieve consistent growth. With the ever changing landscape of HR/Benefits he enjoys the challenge of assisting his clients as a quasi – legal, technology, finance and HR expert. 

When Skylar is away from work he is an Ambassador for the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce and participates in the Young Leader Society through United Way. He enjoys spending time camping, playing basketball and exploring trails in the Santa Barbara foothills with his rambunctious dog Penny..

Priscilla Figueroa

Priscilla Figueroa is a UCSB grad with a BS in Biopsychology who currently works at FastSpring as the People Operations Specialist. She enjoys working in tech because she's fascinated with learning about cutting-edge technology that moves society forward. Her role at FastSpring allows her to carry out best-in-class people and culture practices to enhance employee top performance and productivity. The role combines her love for science/tech and helping people achieve great things.
 
She co-founded SBHRA's Emerging Professionals initiative, which is a group of emerging HR leaders seeking networking and professional development opportunities. She is also a past president of the UCSB HR Club (SHRM Student Chapter 5614).
 
In her spare time, Priscilla enjoys volunteering  with SBHRA, exploring the great outdoors, practicing yoga, and traveling with friends and family.

 

Susie Couture

Susie Couture born and raised in California. Ms. Couture joined ZPower as the HR Director in May 2016 previously working for Neovia Integrated Insurance Services in their corporate office in Santa Barbara as their Human Resources Director. Prior to Neovia, Susie lived in Nonthaburi, Thailand working at Wind Energy Holding Company, Ltd., as Chief People Officer, Vice President and as a Vice President for NEEDeed a registered non-profit foundation in Thailand which she still maintains her Board position in the US.

Ms. Couture is an experienced Human Resources leader holding previous responsibility for driving growth, performance and engagement in businesses through effective human resources (HR) and people strategy specifically for ZPower LLC, Wind Energy Holding Company, Clipper Windpower, Plc. and Intri-Plex Technologies in California. Her HR expertise covers the full range of HR competencies such as talent management, performance, compensation, benefit administration, training and employee relations – with a specialty interest in recruitment.

Ms. Couture credentials include a MS in Human Resources Development from Villanova University (Pennsylvania, USA), a BA in Political Science from Westmont College (California, USA), a PHR designation from the Human Resources Certification Institution (HRCI), SHRM-CP designation from the Society of Human Resources Management and certification in Human Resources from University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB-California, USA). She has been on the Santa Barbara Human Resources Association (SBHRA-California, USA) Board of Directors for over 16 years holding various roles including Past President, College Relations, Professional Development and recently Legislative Advocacy Chair. Ms. Couture is a member of Society of Human Management (SHRM), Professionals in Human Resources Association (PIHRA) and a previous guest member of the Personnel Management Association of Thailand (PMAT). 

Susie enjoys running and dancing ballet. She lives in Santa Barbara with her husband Shawn and their cat Dylan.

 

Chery Cerise

Chery Cerise is currently the SBHRA Chapter Administrator. As the nominee for this volunteer board role, she will manage the education resources regarding HR certification. Chery will be a non-voting board member.
 
Chery holds an MBA in Management & Strategy and a BS in HR Management from Western Governors University, Salt Lake City.  She obtained her PHR certification in 2007, and obtained her HRCI California HR certification in 2010. Her SHRM certification credential followed in 2014, as did the SHRM California Employment Law Micro-Credential in 2018.

 

Stephanie Gatlin

Stephanie Gatlin is an HR Business Partner at Sansum Clinic.She has been an HR Professional for 10+ years, working in various industries - internet marketing, tech, and healthcare. She is new to Santa Barbara, having recently moved here from Redondo Beach with her husband David less then two years ago. Fun fact - Stephanie worked for Legoland, Carlsbad, the first summer it opened in the Education/Learning Department.

 

Corinne Santini

Corinne Santini is an accomplished Human Resources professional with more than 15 years experience in public, private, for profit and nonprofit organizations. She is responsible for all aspects of HR, implementing human resource management strategies that enable to recruit, train, and retain a high performing and motivated workforce. She has experience in talent management, staffing, employee benefits, compensation, learning and development, benefits administration, compliance, and employee relations .She is passionate about positive work environments, the HR profession, and dedicated to giving back to the profession and community through volunteer efforts and leadership.

 

Corinne holds an MA, Organizational Communication, Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris III (France) and UCSB (USA). She has been an SBHRA Board Member in various capacities since 2009 (Diversity, Professional Development, Certification). She has also been the lead of SBHRA's SIG Nonprofit group since 2009. Additionally, she has been a Girl Scouts volunteer since 2006, on the AZA HR Committee since 2013, and on the Leadership Development task force since 2017.

Ryuichi Miyazaki

Ryuichi is employed as a Human Resources Generalist at Transphorm Inc in Goleta, a tech company that developed from technology research at UCSB. He primarily supports recruiting, performance management, and employee events.  After graduating from UCSB with degrees in Global Studies and Asian Studies, he spent three years as a technical recruitment consultant in Tokyo. He earned his SHRM-CP certification in June, 2017.  He is a proud San Marcos High School grad and enjoys tennis, travel and the up-coming Soccer World Cup.

 

Jeff Woolever

Workforce Readiness

 

Jeff Woolever is an active HR professional with 20 years experience from small start-ups to large international companies, both locally and nationwide. Jeff is a native of Santa Barbara, born and raised and is a direct descendant to one of the founding families of Santa Barbara.

Jeff has been an active member of the SBHRA Board for almost 5 years in two roles, Workforce Readiness Chair (current) and Secretary (past). 

Jeff is currently an HR Business Partner consultant for various clients and in various markets, offering a wide variety of experiences and knowledge that is transferred to his clients knowledge base.

 

Shaina Semiatin

Diversity & inclusion

 

Shaina Semiatin spearheads all of talent and recruiting for Apeel Sciences, a company that creates all-natural agricultural solutions to help growers protect their crops and increase the shelf life of their harvested fresh produce. Prior to Apeel, Shaina worked as Talent Acquisition Lead for CIC, a company in the Boston tech sector, where she spearheaded interviewing coaching, training, and diversity & inclusion initiatives.

Shaina has previously served on the University of Chicago Alumni Board as well as the Board for the Cambridge Arts Grant Program. She is also the former River Festival Poetry Tent Curator, where she organized 22 LGBTQ+ poets to read their poems publicly for thousands of festival attendees. Shaina is passionate about authentic recruiting and building cultures of diversity, inclusion, and belonging (inside and outside of the office), and is personally LGBTQ-identified.

Her other passions include poetry, live music, wine education, and surfing.  

 

Cherie Welsh

Volunteer Coordinator

 

Cherie Welsh has a background that includes 23 years as a member of SBHRA, starting when she became an “accidental” HR Manager. She has experienced many industries (hi-tech, oil, a garden, medical clinic, publishing) and is currently the HR Manager for the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts and The Granada Theatre. A two-year sabbatical in Ireland provided a cross cultural experience that has enhanced her understanding of people and situations.

 

Cherie is currently serving the Board as Volunteer Coordinator, matching interested members with roles and tasks that they can take on, and thus give back to this organization that provides so much in the way of education and network development.

 

Chery Cerise

Chapter Administrator

 

Chery Cerise took on the role of SBHRA Chapter Administrator in 2011, after moving to sunny California from the lovely-but-cold-in-the-winter clime of Vermont. Well established in the strategic HR and business management career field, she brought her operations experience and tech skills to the table and developed a dynamic web business presence for SBHRA, always a work in progress, plus implemented and managed its newly purchased web-based membership system.

 

Chery holds an MBA in Management & Strategy and a BS in HR Management from Western Governors University, Salt Lake City.  She obtained her PHR certification in 2007, while located in Vermont and obtained her California HR certification in 2010, soon after arriving in California.  Her SHRM certification credential followed in 2014, as did the SHRM California Employment Law Micro-Credential in 2018.

 

Chery joined SBHRA in 2009, because she knew local SHRM-affiliated chapters are an excellent resource for maintaining HR professional credentials. In addition to the SBHRA Chapter Administrator role, she has served as Secretary, assisted as co-chair of SBHRA programming, taught the association's educational HR certification study group series, and represented the association as an employment law advocate on both federal and state levels. Chery has also been a long-time member of SHRM, which she regards as a critical resource for any HR professional or business leader.

 

In 2011, Chery was honored by SBHRA with the Member of the Year award. 

 

In her free time, Chery enjoys spending time with family and friends, adventuring on her road bike, and exploring and embracing the world and its cultural diversity.
