UCSB Student Chapter 5614

SHRM Student Chapter Since 2010

SHRM Student Chapters provide opportunities for students to network on the local level. Student chapters have regular meetings with scheduled programs designed to help members learn more about HR and the real world of business.

Elected student officers run the chapters with the assistance of a chapter advisor and sponsoring professional SHRM chapter members. Chapters invite local businesspeople to speak to the members about current developments in the business world and how they will impact future workers. Beyond the regular meetings, chapters organize a variety of activities including company tours, student conferences, resume-writing and interviewing workshops, fundraisers, internship programs, and social events. These activities allow students to learn more about human resource management while building relationships with local professionals and other students.

History of our Student Chapter

In 2006, SBHRA member Susie Couture and UCSB Career Service Coordinator Deb Artz founded the HR Club at UCSB, inspired by UCSB’s Workplace Workshop. The well-attended workshop gave students an opportunity to network with HR professionals. Local business leaders volunteered their time to speak about HR-related issues. The strong interest UCSB students showed in human resources as an academic subject was obvious to Susie and Deb. To meet the students' need and desire for education in the HR profession, they officially created the student-run HR Club on the UCSB campus, sponsored by SBHRA.

The HR Club formally applied for SHRM Student Chapter designation in 2009 and received the designation in February 2010. Status as a SHRM Student Chapter gives students the opportunity to network with HR professionals by attending SHRM chapter meetings; job shadow or intern in HR departments; gain leadership experience; access research and reference materials, such as, HR Magazine and the SHRM web site; and apply for SHRM awards and scholarships.

With growing interest in HR management, the UCSB HR Club has seen increasing attendance from the UCSB student population. The Club welcomes new members at all times during the school year. Students need not be HR or Business majors or be of a certain class rank or GPA level to join. ALL are welcome!

SHRM recognizes Student Chapter achievements by awarding designations at different levels: Outstanding, Superior Merit, Merit and Honorable Mention, with a consideration of chapter size at each level.

To be eligible for an award, a student chapter must meet all the chapter affiliation requirements and complete a variety of activities to earn points.
