In passing AB 2053, California has become the third state in the US to pass a law regarding workplace bullying (or what AB 2053 refers to as abusive conduct). And, according to a recent study by CareerBuilder, 35% of the workforce encounters bullies at work.

Workplace bullying is systematic psychological abuse that degrades and humiliates, and causes anxiety, depression, burnout, and lower levels of job satisfaction in targets and bystanders. Behaviors include frequent yelling, manipulation of work, nasty emails, social isolation, and a host of others. If allowed to flourish, it causes increased turnover, communication breakdown, reduced quality in work and poor customer service.

This program will take you through the process of developing effective strategies for dealing with workplace bullying and provide a step-by-step guide for building a healthy workplace where employees can thrive. At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the social system of bullying, how to define it, and the behaviors that “count” as bullying and abusive conduct
  • Describe damage caused to targets, bystanders, and the organization in order to make a business case for ending it
  • Definitively describe the seven differences and similarities between harassment and bullying
  • Understand how AB 2053 requires more work from HR than a simple mention of abusive conduct in sexual harassment training
  • Immediately implement action items that will stop abusive behaviors
  • Create an action plan to build a culture intolerant of abuse
