Who We Are

We are an HR professional membership association focused on advancing the HR profession. We offer a variety of educational programs designed to keep members and the business community current on strategic and tactical trends in the HR field.  We provide additional resources and support through our Chapter affiliation with national SHRM.

We have over 200 members representing a wide variety of organizations, primarily within Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Industries represented include (and are not limited to) financial, legal, manufacturing, consulting, HR services, municipal, retail, academic, tech, healthcare, hospitality, insurance, engineering, nonprofit, and agriculture.

We encourage networking among members to foster relationships and share best practices. We also serve as an advocacy resource to HR practitioners, the employers they represent, and the greater business community at large.  

Our History

We began as the Santa Barbara Personnel Association in 1956. The organization was formed to exchange information on HR issues, stay current in the field, and promote professionalism within the HR field.

In 1986, we became SHRM Chapter Affiliate 0461.  We believed then, as we do now, that our voluntary affiliation with SHRM benefits both the Association and our members. 

 

Organization

We hold nonprofit status as a non-charity 501(c)(6) professional organization, governed by a volunteer, working Board of Directors that responsibly leads the association.  Membership dues may be deductible as membership in a professional association on income tax returns.  Contributions or gifts to SBHRA are not deductible as charitable donations.  Company contributions may be considered business-related expenses.   (Consult your tax adviser for more information.) 

 

 We focus on:

  • developing HR professionals strategically and tactically through educational programming and association leadership participation.
  • nurturing a supportive local career network both online and at business networking events.
  • serving as a community business and employment law advocacy resource.

We retain a Chapter Management Professional for expertise in business management practices and association continuity.

The Code of Ethics has been adopted to promote and maintain the highest standards of personal conduct and professional standards among our members. We expect our members to adhere to this code.

 
As members of SBHRA, we pledge ourselves to:

  • Support the Association's goals and objectives for developing the Human Resources management profession.
  • Serve as role models and mentors to others in the Human Resources field.
  • Refrain from using connections with the membership to sell or promote our businesses or personal interests.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of privileged information.
