This presentation gives participants insight into the steps necessary to be ready for when the unexpected happens. You will gain an understanding of practical, tested methods for leading the top team and all employees through preparing for and living through a disaster. You’ll come away with tools and tips for dealing with this critical and timely subject.

Topics

Topics will cover how to:
  • Prepare yourself to lead the planning effort, including necessary competencies
  • Begin development of your business continuity plan; to include contingent HR policies and why they are necessary
  • Assist managers and employees to get through the disaster and recovery process; the new normal
  • Make the powerful forces of denial and resiliency work for you
  • Communicate effectively before, during and recovering from the unexpected
In addition, a Table-Top Exercise will be provided to give you the opportunity to take a real-world scenario and use it to analyze and problem-solve your response.  When disaster strikes in real life, the ability to think clearly and make decisions is critical, which is why planning today will prepare you for tomorrow.
 
Kathryn McKee, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, co-Author of Leading People Through Disasters and Yoli McGlinchey, City of Santa Barbara Emergency Services Manager, will lead you through the development of a continuity plan that will assist in decision-making under pressure.
 

Biographies

Kathryn McKee, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, is President of Human Resources Consortia and previously served as SVP HR for Standard Chartered Bank and First Interstate Bank Limited. Previous assignments in HR were at Mattel Toys and Twentieth-Century Fox Film Corp.   She graduated from UCSB and the Anderson School Executive Program.  She was the 1991 Chairman of the Board for the Society for Human Resource Management

 

Yolanda McGlinchey, Emergency Services Manager, has been the in emergency management for over 25 years. She has been in her current position with the City of Santa Barbara for over 11 years.  She has been involved in numerous Emergency Operation Center activations since 1995. She is also certified to conduct exercises in accordance with the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) and is currently certified by the State of California as an outreach instructor for Emergency Operations Center Essentials and Incident Command System/Standardized Emergency Management/National Incident Management System.
